is a dinosaur. little ethan's kidnaper is dead, 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes killed yesterday in the fbi raid that freed that little boy. victor blackwell, live from midland city, alabama this morning. i know you're very excited to be sharing this information, victor. what do we know about the raid and why law enforcement actually decided to go in? >> good morning, zoraida. two reasons primarily. the first is because authorities say they observed jimmy lee dykes with a gun and the second reason is because in the day leading up to that raid, the communications with dykes had broken down. so they realized they could not wait any longer to go in and rescue ethan. ethan is safe. this is a photograph of the 5-year-old being taken into a hospital after nearly a week being held in an underground bunker in alabama. >> he's fine. he's laughing, playing, joking, eating, the things you would expect a normal 5-year-old or 6-year-old young man to do. he's very brave, he's very lucky. the success story is that he is out safe and doing great. >> reporter: the dramatic end came after officers saw 65-year-old

information. we know that this line of communication with jimmy lee dykes has been opened overnight. we know that the temperatures overnight have been below freezing for the first time so, that has been the greatest worry for the safety of this boy. but, again, a news conference is scheduled to start in just about five minutes. if you see me look off to my left just about probably 40, 50 feet from me is where this news conference will happen. of course we'll bring you updates as they come in. miguel? >> what have you learned, victor, about how this 5-year-old is holding up right now? >> reporter: well, i can tell you up with of the things that has been reported over the past couple days is that he has been heard crying. and that originated from a comment from the mayor of midland city, virgil skipper. so i spoke with him this morning about if he, indeed, heard the boy crying himself. so i said, have you been to the bunker? she said no, i haven't been past the barrier. did you speak with someone who heard the boy crying i asked him. he said no one told me that specifically. so that was specul

bunker, being held, police say, by this man, 65-year-old vietnam vet named jimmy lee dykes. local authorities released that photo late today, first time we have gotten a look at him. he's said to be a survivalist with anti-government views. the immediate crisis began when authorities say he shot and killed a school bus driver and took the boy hostage. victor blackwell is in midland city, alabama, with late details. victor, you learned today the suspect may have met the bus driver before. what do you know about that? >> reporter: well, that's right, anderson. we know this could come down to the road and the bus. we know, as you said, that jimmy lee dykes, this 65-year-old man, who we see is described as being 6 feet tall, about 170 pounds, a man not well liked in this community, we're told by neighbors that he has a history of shouting at anyone who or anything that crosses on to his property line, even the animals. actually, he was supposed to be in court on wednesday for allegedly shooting at a neighbor. the neighbor says that somehow he damaged dykes road and dykes fired shots a

that's been going on. jimmy lee dykes is the suspect. we've been informed by authorities there's been a major development in this case. that's about the only way they will classify what's happened. we have noted there's been some significant activity taking place on site. we saw two ambulances go and then leave the property. they didn't have their lights on. we've also seen clusters of authorities on site as well. all of this of course unusual from what weem been watching over the past several days. and then we've been told there's going to be a news conference and a fairly significant one in just a few minutes. there was a news conference that was held earlier today. it was by the local sheriff. and he insinuated for the first time there could be a motive to all this. listen to what he had to say. >> i can't really comment on anything specific. the communications, anything like that, that's been going on. what i can say generally is based on our discussion with mr. dykes, he feels like he has a story that's important to him. although it's very complex. we tried to make a safe environ

neighbors have identified as 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes stopped a school bus, shot the driver, killed him, and took a random kindergarten on the bunker on his property. now, neighbors describe the vietnam veteran as a survivalist and a menace to the community who had a history of threatening people. our victor blackwell is about a half a mile away from the bunker tonight. victor, i know this has been a very troubling and disturbing the story, because now another 24 hours have gone by. there have been few developments in terms of whether this little boy will be freed. what can you tell us more about this suspect? >> reporter: well, we've spoken with more than a few people in this community who have had run-ins with jimmy lee dykes, and i can tell you that he's not well thought of in this community. they tell us stories of shouting at them, allegedly shooting at them. they say he patrolled his property between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m. with a flashlight and a shotgun and threatened to shoot anyone or anything that came on to his property. one woman we spoke with said she never even knew the man's

in an underground bunker. jimmy lee dykes, a retired truck drive history moved to the area five years ago. police say tuesday he boarded a school bus near his home, killed the driver, took the 5-year-old boy at gunpoint. victor, i know you have learned something about the connection between dykes and the bus driver. >> reporter: erin, that bus driver charles poland drove that route right down 231 at midland city, alabama, every day, and every day the route ended right at the road that leads up to jimmy lee dykes' property, the man inside that bunker. we've said as we've learned from neighbors the past few days that jimmy lee dykes is very protective of his property, they say he would walk his property line with a gun in one hand and a flashlight in the other and shout at anything or any animal that walked across his property. each day we're told by a man who's known the bus driver about 20 years, he would turn that bus on the road at the end of the road, just the tip of it, at jimmy lee dykes' property and that made dykes angry. and he would shout at the man and the bus. what we're also told, the

, as you said, that jimmy lee dykes, this 65-year-old man we see, was described as being 6 feet tall, about 170 pounds. a man who was not well liked in this community. we're told by neighbors he has a history of shouting at anyone who or anything that crosses onto his property line, even the animals. actually, he was supposed to be in court on wednesday for allegedly shooting at a neighbor. the neighbor says that somehow he damaged dikes' road, and dykes fired a shot at him. that was supposed to be on wednesday, but we know by wednesday, dykes and this kindergartner had been in this bunker for some time. we want to show you the bunker, the lay of the land. this is a description based on a description by the neighbor. you see the trailer. that's where he lives. next to it, a red container for storage. and then the bunker. 10 to 12 feet high with cinder block steps along the side and bricks lining the walls. there's no mortar because this thick, red, alabama clay keeps everything together, and because he was a survivalist, we do not know how long he can stay in this bunker, but we're told, th

dragged him there. how did hostage taker jimmy lee dykes die in the raid? how did authorities see dykes holding a weapon, a key development deciding to act immediately and what was the explosion at the time of the raid? was it tactical or did dykes plant explosives around the bunker as some neighbors feared? but for the moment at least a small town community is celebrating the boy who has been at the center of their prayers is unharmed and in good spirits. >> it's a relief for us to be able to reunite a mother with her child. >> reporter: sheriff wally olson speaking after the 5-year-old we've come to know as ethan was rescued from his six-day nightmare. >> he's a very special child. he's been through a lot. he's endured a lot and it's by the grace of god that he's okay. >> reporter: it happened monday afternoon, negotiations broke down and authorities thought that jimmy lee dykes who kidnapped ethan and held him underground for a week had a gun. they stormed the bunker. >> i heard a big boom and then i heard i believe i heard rifle shots. >> reporter: and give us a sense how loud of a
